You already know Pilates feels good and makes your body look better!

You may even realize it makes you stand up straighter and have a tighter belly, but did you also know Pilates is great for athletes?

Just ask Gena Walker!  She came to Pilates 1901 via her husband, Wade, to improve her strength, balance, and core for her favorite past time:  kite surfing!   For those of you who aren’t familiar with the sport, kite surfing.

Kiteboarding is a surface water sport combining aspects of windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A kitesurfer or kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without foot-straps or bindings.  Whoah!  Talk about applying your Pilates principles!  You can certainly see where breathing, shoulder stabilization, rib cage and pelvic placement and body awareness would come in handy!

That’s exactly what Gena wrote to me in an email from the Cayman Islands this morning where she is putting her Pilates into practice, kite surfing!

” Hi Tina, Kim, and Miriam,

I am sending you a video link to You Tube. I was out yesterday and my friend did a quick video of me kiting. I’m on a 10 Meter kite, with about 20 knots of wind. As you can see from the stills my form is not perfect yet, but my core is a huge help in getting that perfect form.

Thank you so much for all the training, my core is even getting stronger. I can’t tell you how much the exercise help me achieve my goal. I’m on my way and it feels good. Kim the balance you helped me with, Miriam the strength, and Tina great trainers and a nice environment.  Thank you Pilates 1901!”
